Masculine Portrait Samples Combining Art and Photography in Masculine Portraits

My goal is to create and capture a special mood that makes my subject shine. I employ several special effects that can help enhance that special moment. This page is just a sampling of what I have done.

Chris

Chris

For the session with Chris we tried many different poses, clothing and lighting arrangements.
For the first one I combined a block wall in the background later for a grunge effect.

These sessions usually last a minimum of one hour, sometimes longer. Many times we have several sessions. This gives the model a better understanding of who I am and what the project is all about. In following sessions we have already developed a rapport and the model can feel more relaxed and more creative.

A few of the models you see here were friends before we started.
All of them were friends when we were finished.

Ephrain

This was shot in a practice studio at the college I was working at as the campus photographer. Ephrain was from South America.

We set up a set of flash units to create the lighting and a huge black drap to block out the back wall.

   Isaiah

Isaiah is a handsome young man with fantastic curly dark hair. He looks great in leather and denim. He was great on the guitar and just sat and played while I shot photos and tried different angles.

We shot in the studio using one main light and reflectors.

The motorcycle shot was taken on the top of a parking garage.

Single source lighting created a dramatic, classic effect. We call this Rembrandt lighting.
It works very well to photograph men. It can be harsh to pick up skin surface details or soft to minimize surface details.

Dennis, 1979

Our next door neighbor at the time. This photo was shot outdoors under a parachute with the light shining from behind.

Dan

I won Grand Prize with this photo (above) of Dan at the 2003 MCA Photo Contest.

Dan has a very lean body and is a hard worker. He put his hands on the top of his head and it really showed off his muscular shoulders.

Dylan

This has got to be one of my favorites. We shot in the studio under multiple lights. He had a wonderful leather bomber jacket and a great look. I added the grunge background later.

This one was also shot in the studio and the brick walls, smoke and dirt added later.

Tony

Tony was shot in the studio with single source lighting. This session was pre-digital. We had an extended session
and tried quite a few poses. Many times experiments turn out better than planned poses.
